I load super sonic but I am going to load some sub-sonic for my Son.
What I am loading is a 200gr Sierra Matchking using H110. Hodgdon has the following load data for a different bullet.
208 gr A-Max
9.4 gr of H110
COL 2.260
1,066 ft/s
Would this be a good load, or does anyone have something better?
I don't have a cronograph so I want to make sure that I am sub sonic.

What are you shooting it out of?
If a single shot or bolt action it may work fine.
In a AR15 you most likely will not get H110 to function at subsonic velocities.
I have not used this powder but many others have, so they can tell you from experience.

He will be shooting an AR.
The powders that I have to load with are H110/W296 and IMR 4227. Would the 4227 be a better power to load with?
What about using a lighter buffer spring and if so, what spring.

I have not used the 4227. but I believe that it will have a better chance of working an AR15 then H110 or W296. Someone has used it, so maybe they will chime in. Or search around for a load using it.

What barrel length?TTNWA wrote:He will be shooting an AR.

I've tried a 200 grain load with mixed results. I made some using 8 grains of Lil'Gun pushing a 200 grain Nosler Accubond. It short cycled in my 16" carbine gassed gun (no suppressor), ejected, but wouldn't feed or lock back. I had an "H" buffer. I changed the buffer to a carbine buffer and they would cycle and feed, but not lock back, so it was close. The math comes out to around 1050 fps, but I haven't run them through a chrono.
According to Hornady load data, 8 grains of Win 296 should give about 975-1000 fps, and falls along the same lines as the Lil'Gun when compared to heavier powder loads on the chart. You could try that and see what you get. I doubt a barrel shorter than 16" would have enough gas pressure to cycle without a can on it.
To be safe, break the gun after firing the first round, pull the BCG and make sure the barrel is clear.

I am not sure the length of his barrel, but I know he has a license for a SB rifle and he does shoot with a supressor. I have found a load for for 4227 and a 200gr bullet, but the question is- will it cycle the rifle.

A shorter barrel with a Pistol Gas Length will cycle better than the 16 inch barrel/Carbine gas.Pointnpull wrote: According to Hornady load data, 8 grains of Win 296 should give about 975-1000 fps, and falls along the same lines as the Lil'Gun when compared to heavier powder loads on the chart. One way to know for sure. Load two, see if it feeds the second, and see if it locks the action after the second.TTNWA wrote:I am not sure the length of his barrel, but I know he has a license for a SB rifle and he does shoot with a supressor. And my brain was working backwards above....
